Yes thats right, we have made the big move, a week earlier than the scheduled 24th July. The impromptu decision was made mid morning Friday (17th July, 2009) after discovering, Smithbrook was all out of power. It is assumed the heavy storms on the Thursday night were to blame for the overhead lines coming down in the Cranleigh area. As a result we were left with few other options but to relocate to our shiny new office in the heart of Guildford.

Armed with only the bare essentials, a small part of the Kyan team made their way over to Guidlford to get set up and crack on with some pending work. The remainder of the guys sort about hiring a van and made what seemed like very light work, relocating the majority of the office equipment to Guildford. As expected a number of trips were made, but it wasn't long until the new office started to look somewhat more familiar than the empty white shell it was when we first arrived on Friday morning.

Making light work of the move

Touch wood, to this moment in time, everything seems to have run relatively smoothly with regards to the move. Kyan's rack was moved successfully by Nick and a few others and was setup again in the space of a few hours. Our only gripe at present, is the very low bandwidth Internet connection we have. As of 11:50am today we are currently witnessing the breakneck download speeds of around 0.2mb per second. Split between an office of 12 this is far from ideal. However, we are very thankful this is the worst of our worries.

So, here we are, all set up. The seating plan is in practice and everyone is still adjusting screens, seats, cabling and telephones to work with the new environment. It is certainly a different feel to the exposed beams, bricks and high roof of Smithbrook but there is plenty of scope for customising our new office. Some serious cross desk discussions are taking place with regards to the optimal wall positioning for the office jukebox speakers, where our three giant E-Boy posters should all go as well as how else we can brighten up the office.

The novelty factor of choosing where to have lunch is still at large; Top Table further up the high street is still my favorite. Nibbles, just round the corner didnt quite cut it for me and Wagamama at the bottom of the high street, although very tasty, is far from suitable for frequenting on a daily basis when it comes to price. Anyone else feel a 'Where should i lunch in Guildford today?' app coming on?

All in all we are loving the new office. The change is sure to inject an extra spark of creativity within the team; i have already spotted designers scribbling down fresh ideas and im pretty certain the decibel level of developers thumping on keyboards has risen too. Then there is the abundance of space in which several cats, at full stretch, hanging onto each other by only their paws, could be easily swung (no cats were harmed in this experiment); a key motivator behind the move. All this and an Air Conditioning system that will hopefully prevent the 32C office temperatures we were experiencing a few weeks back.

Lovely pad guys - the centre of Guildford according to Google Maps - that's got to mean something! The coffee from the tiny bar over the road is lovely by the way.

Really, come and see us. We're very proud of the new pad (at least we will be when we tidy up). Alan, your trip may be a bit longer than most. But Des & Pascal — no excuses!

Fast movers as well as fast workers, then. What a magnificent decision and implementation in such a short time. Really pleased for you, and may the new office scene lead to even greater heights of creativity. Keith

Looks great - and some feat of organisation to be up and running so quickly. I look forward to making a closer inspection soon.
