The Bright Agency represent illustrators, artists and designers that specialise in children’s publishing. Their ethos of nurturing young illustrators and artists has paid dividends, as their many awards and prizes shows.
The Bright Agency understands the evolving commercial market of publishing and with the recent move towards digital publishing Kyan have helped Bright adapt to fit into this new commercial space.
The challenge
Bright had an established process for displaying and selling images on their existing site, but it couldn’t scale adequately. The company was growing quickly and so was demand for the number of illustrations they needed to process. Bright came to us in search of an up-to-date management system that would get out of their and allow them to concentrate on running the company.
The solution
We built a cloud based solution that automated the uploading, processing and presentation of the illustrations Bright received. Bright no longer need to worry about how much disk space they require and no more tedious afternoons spent re-sizing images. We also designed and built an attractive website complete with comprehensive image search to really show off the illustrations.
The result
The client’s throughput of illustration processing has increased dramatically, and by using Amazon’s services it is trivial to scale their system up at any time to cope with increased demand. Additionally, the system allows their sales team to easily search their images and create PDF ‘lightboxes’ – compilations of sample images – to show to prospective clients.
Living in the cloud
The Bright Agency are almost a textbook example of a company that has really benefited from cloud computing. Were they to try to set up a similar system before the advent of cloud resources they would have had to provision an expensive and powerful computer, with specifications based on best guesses of how their business would scale in the future. The associated cost would have been all upfront and they would need to continually re-assess their needs, upgrading their hardware as the company grew.
With Amazon’s S3 (storage) and EC2 (compute) facilities Bright can rent computing space and power on a ‘per use’ basis, ensuring that as their business grows the computing power they have on tap scales at the same rate without large upfront costs.
